Great guide, thanks John.
The Mac OS 8 macintosh.js app itself is by Rieseberg, but it runs through the Basilisk II 68k Macintosh emulator. Reiseberg's app can be downloaded complete, though, without a separate install of.
Just a note, in case anyone has the same issue. At first I couldn't get this to work. I tried logging out and back in (still no joy), then restarting the mac (still no joy).
- If you're able, we recommend upgrading to a newer macOS (10.12+) and upgrading to the newest agent. Make sure your machine has these prerequisites: OS X Yosemite (10.10), El Capitan (10.11), or macOS Sierra (10.12) Git 2.9.0 or higher (latest version strongly recommended) Meets all prereqs for.NET Core 1.x.
- MacOS Server, formerly named Mac OS X Server and OS X Server, is a discontinued, stand-alone server operating system by Apple Inc. It is also the name of its replacement software, an operating system addition, for macOS that provides additional server programs along with management and administration tools for iOS and macOS. Prior to version 10.7, Mac OS X Server was a separate but similar Unix server.
Try doing both of those first. However, if, like me, you still can't get the local host site to load, try the following: You should find a file at /Library/WebServer/Documents/index.html.en . This contains the text 'It works!' referred to in the post. What I did was duplicate that file in the same folder and changed the duplicate's name to 'index.html', leaving the original in situ.
Both local and user sites then loaded. After which, I was able to delete the duplicated file and everything now works without issue. Just to be clear, leave the original file index.html.en where it is, untouched and unharmed throughout this step.

Learn about current and future support
Can We Run Mac Os Apps On Osx Server Settings
Apple continues to develop and support macOS Server, which includes Open Directory, Profile Manager, and Xsan management. The most popular server features—Caching Server, File Sharing Server, and Time Machine Server are bundled with every installation of macOS High Sierra and later, so that even more customers have access to these essential services at no extra cost.
Starting with macOS Server 5.7.1, Apple no longer bundles open source services such as Calendar Server, Contacts Server, the Mail Server, DNS, DHCP, VPN Server, and Websites with macOS Server. Customers can get these same services directly from open-source providers. This way, macOS Server customers can install the most secure and up-to-date services as soon as they’re available.
Apple has published documentation to help with this transition.
